Driving point system in Portugal(Sistema de Pontos)
Just like Italy, France, and some other countries, Italy has a points system that lets the authorities(ANSR) punish drivers who commit traffic offenses.
Every driver starts with 12 points on their driving license.
If a driver does not commit any serious traffic violation at the end of every 3 year period, they gain 2 points until the balance reaches 15. An extra 1 point can also be added in certain situations. The highest points balance someone can get is 16 points.
If a driver commits a serious traffic violation, they lose between 2 and 3 points, and if they commit a very serious traffic violation, they can get a deduction of 4 to 5 points.
If a driver has 4 to 5 points remaining, they are legally mandated to attend a Road Safety Training Course (Ação de Formação de Segurança Rodoviária). Failing to attend results in immediate license revocation.
For drivers who have only 1 to 3 points remaining, they must retake the official Practical Driving Exam.
Drivers who have lost all points will have their driving license automatically revoked.
